Growing up in Geneseo, Mary Alice’s life was shaped by the music of the 1950s, a passion that led her on a cross-country adventure following her favorite band, the Valentino’s, from Illinois to the vibrant city of New York. After graduating from Geneseo High School, Mary Alice made Watervliet her home, where she raised her five children. In those early years, she worked as a hairdresser, not just to make ends meet but to contribute to the family’s expenses. Later, she found herself employed by the Golub Corporation, dedicating thirty years to the company and eventually retiring as a manager.
Mary Alice’s zest for life did not diminish with retirement; instead, she embraced her later years with a passion for travel. Her adventurous spirit led her to explore every U.S. state and visit numerous foreign countries, creating a treasure trove of memories and experiences. Alongside her love for exploration, Mary Alice actively participated in various social clubs, reflecting her vibrant personality and commitment to community. One of her significant memberships was in the Empire State Capital Volkesporters, a walking club, where she served as secretary. She was also a proud member of the Red Hat Society, the Capital Area Ski Touring Association (CASTA), and the Menands Senior Citizens. Mary Alice’s involvement in these clubs not only showcased her love for socializing but also highlighted her dedication to staying active and engaged in the community.
Mary Alice’s faith played a central role in her life, as she devoted many years to overseeing the Religious Education Program at the former Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Watervliet. Presently, she was a parishioner of the Shrine Church of St. Anthony of Padua in Troy, where her faith community continued to be a source of strength and connection. Beyond her active lifestyle, Mary Alice was an avid supporter of the Miami Dolphins professional football team, showcasing her diverse range of interests. Her passions, however, paled in comparison to the love and pride she felt for her family.
Mary Alice was most proud of her family, finding endless joy in the company of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Affectionately known as “Gram” and “Gigi,” she became a steadfast pillar of support, attending countless sporting events and other activities, ensuring her presence was felt in every milestone of their lives. Survived by her loving children – Paul J. Torrisi, Margaret “Midge” Siler, Linda Abriel (late Theodore), Tony Torrisi (Ruth), and Aaron Sorell (Rachel) – Mary Alice’s legacy lives on through her cherished grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her dear friend, Lillian Julian.
