Salvatore Garozzo’s story began in the picturesque town of Sant’ Alfio, Sicily, where he was born to Luigi and Francesca Garozzo on the 25th of February 1929. In 1937, at the tender age of eight, Sam embarked on a life-changing journey to Australia. His initial settlement was in the Gordonvale district, where he developed a strong work ethic and a connection to the land while working on various cane farms from a young age.
Sam’s journey took him between Brisbane and Cairns, as he worked on different cane farms, laying the foundation for his future endeavors. Returning to Cairns, Sam discovered his true passion for sales and management. He ventured into the food industry, managing a warehouse in Cairns known as Mario’s Gourmet Foods. His dedication and business acumen led him to take over the wholesale business, giving rise to Garozzo Agencies.
Under Sam’s leadership, Garozzo Agencies became a wholesale institution in Cairns and the largest privately-owned food service company in Queensland at the time. His success was a testament to his unwavering passion for food, business, and family. Sam’s ability to merge these aspects of his life made Garozzo Agencies a pioneering force in their time. In 2014, Salvatore experienced a profound loss with the passing of his beloved wife, Alfia. Her departure left an indelible mark on Sam, a testament to the depth of their bond. Despite this loss, Sam continued to face life with resilience and courage.
Sam leaves behind a legacy of love and accomplishment. He is survived by his three children, Francesca, Rosina, and Luigi, along with seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Beyond his immediate family, Sam touched the lives of many friends and associates, leaving an enduring impact on the Cairns Italian Festival and the broader community.
