Jim Swanson’s early years were defined by his patriotism and service to his country. He proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War, exemplifying his dedication to a greater cause.
After returning from military service, Jim married the love of his life, Geraldine “Gerri” Garrison, 70 years ago in Illinois, marking the beginning of a love story that would endure the test of time. In the realm of education, Jim made significant contributions as a teacher and coach at both the high school and college levels. His coaching prowess led his teams to numerous conference and county championships, with several athletes reaching state and national championships under his guidance. However, Jim’s multifaceted career also included a successful stint in real estate development, showcasing his versatility and entrepreneurial spirit.
Beyond his professional achievements, Jim Swanson dedicated himself to public service in Sterling, IL, where he served as the Mayor, First School Board President, and Board Chairman of various boards and commissions. His exemplary service was recognized with the prestigious P.W. Dillon award, a testament to his impactful leadership in the community. One of the most notable chapters of Jim’s life was his involvement in the political arena, particularly in support of his friend, President Ronald Reagan.
