Born on September 22, 1923, in Sterling, IL, Margery’s life was characterized by her dedication to family, education, and a fulfilling career in nursing. Margery was the daughter of Marietta and August Kohl. On January 19, 1947, she married Arza Spooner, and together they built a life marked by love and shared accomplishments. Margery’s educational journey was a testament to her intellectual curiosity and commitment to healthcare.
She graduated from Sterling High School in 1941 and pursued her passion for nursing at Jane Lamb Hospital in Clinton, IA, earning her degree in 1945. Furthering her expertise, Margery attended Baylor University Hospital in Dallas, TX, obtaining a postgraduate degree in operating technique in 1946. Her pursuit of knowledge continued as she attended Sauk Valley College and the University of St. Francis in Joliet, IL, where she proudly earned a Bachelor’s degree. Margery dedicated many years of her life to the field of nursing, working in various hospitals as a Registered Nurse. Her skills, compassion, and unwavering commitment to patient care left a lasting impact on those she served.
Survived by her loving family, Margery is remembered by her daughter Kristine (Marty) Nelson, son Kevin (Delia) Spooner, and Kara Erlenbaugh. Her legacy extends to four grandchildren and several great-grandchildren who carry on her spirit of resilience and kindness. Margery was preceded in death by her parents, Marietta and August Kohl, and her beloved husband, Arza Spooner. Despite the deep sense of loss, the family is comforted by the knowledge that Margery’s love and wisdom will continue to guide them.
In accordance with her wishes, there will be no visitation. Private graveside services for the family will be held, officiated by the pastor of St. John’s Lutheran Church, where Margery was a lifelong member. This intimate gathering will allow the family to say their farewells in a personal and meaningful way.
