Viola Bushman Obituary, Death – On February 6, 2024, Dixon, IL bid farewell to a beloved member of its community, Viola “Vi” Bushman. A woman of unwavering dedication to others, Vi’s life was marked by selfless service, a warm smile, and a heart that embraced everyone she encountered. As we celebrate her life, let us reflect on the legacy of a remarkable individual. Viola Schmoll, affectionately known as Vi, was born on August 6, 1926, in Avon, SD, to Philip and Alma Schmoll. On August 12, 1961, she embarked on a journey of love and companionship by marrying Howard Bushman in Dixon. Together, they shared many years of joy until Howard’s passing in 1992.

Vi’s life was a testament to the impact one person can have through acts of kindness and service. For 22 years, she dedicated her time and energy as a volunteer at KSB Hospital, where her warm presence provided comfort to those in need. Additionally, Vi devoted another 22 years to supporting a homeless shelter, embodying the spirit of compassion and empathy. At St. Paul Lutheran Church in Dixon, Vi found joy in crafting quilts that would bring warmth and solace to others. Her involvement in community initiatives extended to the Leydig Center, where she lent a helping hand.

Vi’s commitment to making a positive difference was evident in every stitch of the quilts she created and every act of kindness she bestowed upon her community. Vi’s infectious smile was her trademark. It was a reflection of her genuine and caring nature. Always ready to assist anyone in need, Vi’s joyful spirit created a sense of camaraderie in Dixon, leaving an enduring mark on the hearts of those fortunate enough to know her. Viola “Vi” Bushman is survived by her children, Bill Bushman of Dixon, Randy (Annette) Manthei of Kirkwood, and Diane (Roger) Meinen of Freeport.

Her family was at the center of her heart, and she leaves behind cherished memories for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren to hold dear. Vi was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Bushman; sisters Elizabeth Oorlong, Esther Stimpson, Lydia Craig, and Lenora Barker; brothers Jake, Leonard, and Raymond Schmoll; and grandson Zachary Behrens. As she joins those who have gone before her, Vi’s spirit becomes a part of the cherished tapestry of family and community. A visitation to celebrate Vi’s life will be held on Friday, February 9, 2024, from Noon to 1:00 PM at Chapel Hill Funeral Home in Dixon.

The funeral service, officiated by Reverend Karen Tews, will follow at 1:00 PM. Vi’s final resting place will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Dixon. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to honor Vi’s legacy of compassion and service.
