Born on July 26, 1937, in Cleveland, Ohio, Steve was the son of Milos and Mary May Lakich, both of Yugoslavian descent. Following the untimely passing of his parents, Steve and his older brother Mike were raised in Fontana, California, under the care of their Aunt Bertha. Steve’s upbringing instilled in him a sense of resilience and determination that would shape his character for years to come.

Steve’s educational journey led him to become a proud member of Fontana High School’s inaugural graduating class in 1955. He then embarked on a three-year stint with the United States Marine Corps before returning to Fontana to pursue higher education.
