David Leishman Obituary, Death- David Leishman, a beloved figure in Dover, bid farewell on Monday, February 5, 2024, at the age of 72, after a brave struggle with cancer. Born on January 1, 1952, in Alliance to Lewis and Patsy Leishman, David’s life was characterized by a love for music, hard work, and a deep connection with his community. A graduate of Claymont High School in 1970, David found his passion in music, particularly as a bass guitar player for various local bands. His musical journey not only brought joy to his life but also enriched the lives of those in the Dover community. David was a proud member of the Union Hill of Sugarcreek Church, where his musical talents were often shared during worship services.
A Legacy of Hard Work
David’s dedication extended beyond his musical pursuits. He contributed significantly to the local workforce, working for Leishman Coal and eventually becoming the owner of Camco from 1974 to 2005. Later, he transitioned to Long Hole Augering before embracing retirement. Even in his later years, David continued to stay active, working part-time for Lowe’s Home Improvement Store in New Philadelphia.
Family and Love
On October 19, 2007, David found his life partner in Karen Scheufler Hershberger. Their union was a testament to enduring love, and Karen survives him. Together, they formed a blended family with children Jeremy, Dane, Alex, and Jessica, as well as stepsons Wesley and Jeffrey. David’s love extended to his grandson, Carter Tusa of Andover, Minnesota, and step-granddaughter Winrey Hershberger. Despite life’s twists and turns, David’s commitment to family was unwavering. David’s life was not without its challenges. His resilience was tested when cancer claimed the life of his daughter, Emma Leishman. Despite this heartbreaking loss, David found strength in his family and community.
Community Farewell and Memorial Service
A memorial service to celebrate David’s life will be held on Friday, February 9, 2024, at 11 AM at the Union Hill of Sugarcreek Church, officiated by Rev. Jeff Calkins. The service will be followed by burial at Union Hill Cemetery. Friends and well-wishers are invited to pay their respects on Thursday from 4-7 PM at Smith-Varns Funeral Home in Sugarcreek. Additionally, there will be an opportunity to gather at the church on Friday from 10-11 AM before the memorial service. As Dover mourns the loss of David Leishman, the community remembers him not only for his musical talents and hard work but also for the love and dedication he showered upon his family. In the echoes of his bass guitar and the memories shared by those who knew him, David’s legacy lives on. May he rest in peace, leaving behind a melody of cherished moments and a community forever grateful for his presence.
