Her educational journey led her to Melvin-Sibley High School and eventually to Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (SIUC), where she earned both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in social work. Connie’s professional calling centered around aiding children, youth, and families grappling with mental health, addiction, and societal challenges. Her impactful career included roles at Franklin-Williamson Human Services and Jackson County Community Mental Health. For over two decades, she shared her wisdom at SIUC, influencing and guiding students long into her retirement.
Family and Grandchildren: Her Greatest Joy
On July 1st, 1978, Connie exchanged vows with Joe Baker, and together they welcomed two sons, Andrew and Ryan Baker. Connie’s greatest joys were found in the laughter of her five beautiful grandchildren. Even in her final moments, the cherished moments with her grandchildren lingered, leaving an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to witness their bond. Retirement brought forth a new chapter for Connie and Joe, who opened Rosebud Antiques in Carterville. Connie’s lifelong love for antiques and vintage jewelry found expression in hours spent exploring estate sales, auctions, and yard sales. As her health declined, she transitioned her treasure hunting online, maintaining her passion for rare and interesting finds until the end.
Community Advocate and Philanthropist
Connie’s impact extended beyond her professional realm. Active in the community, she lent her time to organizations such as the United Methodist Children’s Home, Shawnee Alliance for Seniors, and the Department of Children and Family Services. An outspoken advocate for women’s rights and health, Connie’s commitment to social causes defined her character. Connie’s zest for life manifested in her love for reading and travel. Her literary pursuits and globetrotting adventures took her to Australia, Egypt, England, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Mexico, Russia, and Scotland, forging a tapestry of memories and friendships that enriched her life.

Connie leaves behind her husband, Joe, sons Andrew and Ryan, five cherished grandchildren, and siblings Mary Jane Nimmo, Cindy Busick, Greg Kerber, and Tony Kerber. She joins her parents and brother Tom in eternal rest at Mount Hope Cemetery in Sibley, IL. A celebration of Connie’s remarkable life will be held on Saturday, February 17th, at 6:00pm at the Carterville Community Center.
