H. Curfman Obituary, Death – In the peaceful town of Coudersport, Pennsylvania, the community mourns the loss of a beloved resident, H. Richard “Dick” Curfman, who passed away on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, at the age of 94. His journey on this earthly plane concluded at Sweden Valley Manor, Coudersport. Born on October 22, 1929, in McConnellstown, Huntingdon County, Dick was the son of Homer O. and Helen E. Lang Curfman. In the embrace of grief, the Virgil L. Dick Curfman’s life was marked by unwavering dedication and service to both his country and community. After graduating from Huntingdon High School in 1947, Dick became a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Korea from 1950 to 1952. His military commitment extended beyond, with membership in the PA National Guard Unit based in Huntingdon from 1948 to 1957. During the 1960s and 1970s, Dick contributed to the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC), serving as a district game protector, U.S. Deputy Game Warden, and in various supervisory roles, including the PGC Special Investigation Unit.

In 1960, Dick graduated first in his class from the Ross Leffler School of Conservation in Brockway. His post-graduate career at the PA Game Commission was marked by accolades, including the Shikar SaFari Award, Wildlife Conservation Award, and recognition as Wildlife Officer of the Year. Following retirement from the PGC in 1992, Dick remained engaged in the community, serving on boards like the PA Lumber Museum and the Potter County Planning Commission. Dick Curfman’s exemplary service garnered him numerous awards and recognitions, such as the Fish and Wildlife Law Enforcement Award and the Potter County Conservation District Awards for Conservation Education and Outstanding Service to Potter County Agriculture. His commitment to environmental stewardship extended to life memberships in the Black Forest Conservation Association and the Potter County Anglers.

Dick’s devotion to family was unparalleled. His 61-year marriage to Betty A. Homolash was a testament to enduring love. He leaves behind a son, Richard B. Curfman, a daughter, Karen A. (Jerry) Johnson, two granddaughters – Stacey A. (Craig) Kinney and Shannon M. Curfman – and three great-grandchildren – Karli A., Camrin K., and Mack M. Kinney. His family’s love for the outdoors and sports mirrored Dick’s passions, creating a legacy of shared experiences. Beyond his professional achievements, Dick immersed himself in community and Masonic endeavors. He was a life member of the Standing Stone Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1754,

a 50-plus year member of the Frank P. Hommon American Legion Post 24, and a Masonic member of Eulalia Lodge 342 F & AM in Coudersport. His Masonic ties extended to the Coudersport Consistory, Royal Arch Chapter 263, and Potter Commandery 69. To pay respects to Dick Curfman and offer solace to his family, calling hours are scheduled from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, February 11, 2024, and 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Monday, February 12, 2024, at Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, 118 S. Union St., Shinglehouse. Funeral services, officiated by Pastor Fred Kemp of Potter County Baptist Church, will follow at 11 a.m. on Monday.

The Masonic service, conducted by Eulalia Lodge 148 F & AM, will take place at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. The Potter County Honor Guard will accord military honors on Monday. Graveside burial services are scheduled for noon on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, in Huntingdon Memorial Gardens, Huntingdon, with Pastor Jack Russell officiating.
