There is a new security update for Apple available to protect against criminals
Apple has introduced a significant security update for iPhones with its release of iOS 17.3, focusing on safeguarding users’ personal data in the event of device theft. The update, named “Stolen Device Protection,” enhances security measures by introducing additional steps to access information stored on the device.
To activate Stolen Device Protection, users need to update their iPhones to iOS 17.3 and navigate to Face ID & Passcode in the settings. After entering the passcode, users can scroll down to the Stolen Device Protection option and enable it. However, the feature requires two-factor authentication and the activation of “Find My” for the associated Apple ID account.
Prior to this update, iPhone users could potentially access highly sensitive information and make significant changes to the device settings using just a passcode. With Stolen Device Protection, additional security layers are implemented. Users are now prompted to enter biometric data, either via Face ID (facial recognition) or Touch ID (fingerprint), to access data or make alterations. For more sensitive actions, such as changing an Apple ID password, modifying biometric scanning settings, deactivating Find My, or disabling Stolen Device Protection, users must provide biometric data. Additionally, a one-hour security delay is introduced after the initial biometric input before users can re-enter the data to complete the requested changes.
An Apple spokesperson emphasized the company’s commitment to developing robust protections for user data, particularly in response to evolving threats. Stolen Device Protection serves as an added layer of defense in cases where a thief may observe a user entering the passcode and subsequently steal the device. It’s important to note that these enhanced security measures are activated when the user is away from familiar locations, such as home or work. The device automatically learns and stores these locations to apply additional security measures when needed.
